Well. The time has already come for us to move on from Toronto. We woke up, got everyone and everything loaded up and we were off.
The drive was SO beautiful. The leaves were at peak loveliness. For most of my life I have lived in places where the leaves on the trees turn yellow during the fall. In the Toronto area, most of the trees turn bright red, with pops of yellow. It was pretty spectacular.
Unfortunately, our wait at the US-Canada border was on the longish side. Probably close to an hour and a half. But we had beautiful views of Lake Huron, which made it nicer. And we fortunately didn’t have any trouble getting through. Hallelujah.
We then made our way to Detroit.
This is where the story gets complicated.
Jonathan was set to begin his new job at Amazon the very next day. But he hasn’t gotten a laptop. (There have been SO many issues trying to get him a computer (we later found out that 3 separate laptops and 6 (separately shipped) security keys were sent out.)
One of the laptops was sent to our good friend, Sarah‘s mom in Detroit. We had been watching the tracking info and had been hoping that it would show up before we passed through and that we would be able to pick it up on our way. Well, that didn’t happen…. So we were probably going to have to come back. (Spoiler, we were wrong about that. Otherwise we would’ve spent more time here.) But in the meantime, he needed something to get him through the first few days.
And here’s the other thing. My laptop was on its last leg.
One day a couple of weeks ago, I had closed my computer, not realizing that an aglet from the drawstring of Jonathan’s basketball shorts had gotten stuck by the hinge point. That was enough to crack the lower left part of the screen. It wasn’t a big deal at first. But over the last week, the screen has seriously deteriorated. Only the top 1/3 of the screen was functional at all. And even that part was pretty jumpy and pixel-y. It was such a pleasure to work with.
I needed a new computer anyway, and he needed to have SOMETHING to work on, until he received his actual computer.
So, we stopped in Detroit, at an Apple Store, and picked up a new laptop. (You’re welcome, Michigan, for the tax dollars 🤓🤓).
I am typing on the new computer. And it is a beautiful, beautiful thing.
Also, we stopped at Costco and got food and filled up the car with gas. (We can feed our whole family for $15 at Costco. That is also a beautiful, beautiful thing)
After all that, we got back on the road and continued making our way to Chicago.
When we finally made it, we were all very happy to be out of the car. It was about 10 hours in the car today.
Welcome to Chicago!!
