Life continues right along here in New Hampshire. Jonathan and the three older kids went running this morning and got caught in a bit of a downpour. They looked more like they’d been swimming than running.
Also, Evie has big feelings and her favorite word right now is “Dummy”. Just in case you were curious.
We were due to go on a family hike, and as I considered our many options, I decided that I really wanted to bring everyone back to experience the best parts of the the loop that Logan and I did for his Mom’s Night off hike.
Logan and I went clockwise when we did it, and it was lovely. But. The best part was definitely the last half of the loop where you’re walking along the Pemigewasset river the entire time. And so, we decided to do it again, but to start (and only do) the part along the river.
As soon as Jonathan heard that we would be proximate to water, he insisted on bringing swimsuits and towels, because our children are incapable of resisting bodies of water and they just always seem to end up with wet and muddy clothing. He is so smart.
Jonathan finished work for the day and off we went. The hike itself was lovely: a nice jaunt through the forest. About 3/4 of mile in, we found what I had been looking for: the swimming hole. It is a section of the river where the water moves relatively slowly and it gets pretty deep. Logan and I had seen people swimming when we did the hike and it looked so fun. Plus, the location is just gorgeous:
We climbed down to the river, the kids did a deck change and we all got in. The water was definitely a bit cool, but you got used to it pretty quickly. And honestly, I was surprised that it wasn’t colder given it’s location.
It was incredibly refreshing on a hot day. And the water was crystal clear. And we had the place completely to ourselves for a good long while.
Basically, it was heaven.
It turns out that there are some pretty deep spots. We figured that at the deepest point it was probably close to 10 feet or so.
We had a blast. I love New Hampshire. This was absolutely one of the top adventures we’ve done during this nomading adventure.
The twins got chilly before the rest of us, but they were happy to sit on the bank and eat snacks once we changed them back into their warm clothes. Logan joined the snack party before too long.
Clara and Jonas would have stayed there all day if we’d let them. They had a great time.
But all good things must come to an end, and we made our way back to the car.
And it was quite the walk back. Evie and Isaac both had major tantrums. During one of these freak-outs, I got kicked in the eye with a shoe covered in sand. That was fun.
But this was still one of our absolute favorites.
