The Museum of Science (again!) (08.31.22)

The three older kids arrived home from NYC on Sunday night at about midnight. After playing hard in NYC for three days. So, understandably they were very tired. So, we took it easy for a couple of days to let them rest and get back into the rhythms of normal life.

We basically just hung around on Monday and Tuesday.

On Tuesday evening, we ate dinner early and then went to the Charlestown Navy Yard. I had signed up for a free ‘Sunset Yoga’ class. We intentionally arrived early, so that we could wander around for a bit together and then we took the kids over to the playground and turned them loose.

When it was time for the class to begin, I made my way over. This was my very first in-person yoga class. And I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Once it was done, I went back over to where the rest of the fam was hanging out. They had discovered a splash pad. Because. Of course they had. They were all half naked and soaking wet. Cause, that’s just their nature. (I sang the “We will never see these people again” anthem in my head.)

Eventually we were able to drag them away from the splash pad and playground and we made our way home.

We went home and got everyone in bed as fast as possible because we had plans for the next day!

Specifically, the Museum of Science! Part 2!

Museum of Science

Clara has been looking forward to checking out the bird section at the MoS since she first saw it on the map. We didn’t have a chance to go during our first visit, so that was the first thing we went to see today upon our arrival.

She was very pleased that she knew the names of so many of birds. There were also exhibits about flight patterns and nesting etc.

We were right next to the stage where they have Live Animal Presentations and so we decided to check it out when a presentation began.

This one happened to be about poop… (there were many giggles about this). Specifically, the presentation was about what scientists can learn about animals from their poop. It was actually very interesting. And we were all quite delighted to see that our first animal visitor was an adorable bun bun named Pancake.

The second animal visitors were not quite as adorable: Madagascar hissing cockroaches. [shudder]

Once the presentation was done, we wandered over to The Charles River exhibit, which was dedicated to all the scientific pursuits surrounding the Charles river: engineering, habitat research, etc.

The kids enjoyed that.

My good friend who lived in Boston for years told us that we absolutely HAD to go see the lightning show while we were here. So after checking out the Charles River exhibit, we made our way over to the lightning theater for the show. We had excellent seats.

To say that it was a hit would be an understatement. Over the next couple of days, Jonas talked our ears off discussing resistors, conductors, etc. And the twins talked about how the lightning was singing and dancing.

Everyone loved this. It was pretty darn cool. And of course, there were many bolts of lightning throughout the show.

After the show was over, everyone was beginning to show signs of hunger and so we made our way over to the cafe to get lunch. It was a bit of an ordeal with only one adult, but we got there in the end, thanks to Clara’s assistance.

After lunch, we were making our way back toward the main part of the museum and I saw a photobooth. I love Photobooths, and so of course, we did that. All I can say is that these photobooths are definitely not meant to fit 6 people…. But it’s fine. We got at least part of everyone in the frame every time.

Then we went to the favorite area from last time: the STEM area. And it was once again one of the highlights of our trip.

We first used the computer kiosks and did a little bit of programming.

And that was great. Until, the bobsled track came out. The Museum of Science does little programs on a regular basis where you get to do hands-on experiments and builds and things. And today, the kids were asked to turn small pipette trays into bobsleds.

They were given fabric, pipe cleaners, weights, binder clips etc. And then the bobsleds were put on a little racetrack. It was basically like the pinewood derby.

They kept track of a few different things like the fastest and slowest bobsleds, and the kids could reconfigure and race their bobsleds as many times as they wanted. This was definitely a highlight of the day as well.

After we finished up here, we made our way home.

In the end, I’m not sure which thing they liked the most: the bobsleds or the lightning show. But I know that everyone had a great time and they have been asking to go back.
