The Rockland Harbor Breakpoint Lighthouse is a pretty unique experience, as it is accessed by walking along a mile-long man-made granite breakwater. We laced up our walking shoes and off we went to Rockland harbor.
We arrived, parked, and we nearly lost the children to the allure of the beach. But we managed to corral everyone and we started walking along the breakwater toward the lighthouse. The breakwater itself is a pretty impressive structure. And it was really fun to see all the ocean creatures as we walked along. Especially as we got further from the shore, there were more things to see. We saw lots of jellyfish, several schools of small fish, and even a parrot fish (credit to the Octonauts for enabling the children to identify it on the spot!)
As you can see the breakwater is pretty uneven, and there are a lot of places to trip. Fortunately, we were holding the twins hands nearly every time they fell, so no harm done. Eventually we made it to the lighthouse! It was a warmer day than we had been led to expect. (Often it is quite cool/windy along the breakwater) But that was not the case today. So, we took a small break with water and snacks.
After we’d recuperated a bit, we walked around the lighthouse. The island that it sits on is pretty small. And the the interior was closed today. So we saw what there was to see pretty quickly.
So, then we went down to the little dock that is right next to the lighthouse.
We all went and sat on the dock and put our feet in the water. Like I said, it was pretty warm, and so the cold water felt amazing. Unfortunately, Logan fell in the water. It scared the heck out of him, but fortunately, his head didn’t even go underwater and we fished him out almost immediately.
At this point, the other kids expressed that they wanted to “Fall in the water”. So we said “heck” And let them dunk themselves in the water up to their waists, cause we’re nice. And also, we hoped it would cut down on the complaining. And it did.
It was a lovely spot. And that is the place to see the lighthouse from. The island itself is too small to allow you much of a view. But from the dock, it’s quite lovely.
Eventually, we managed to tear the children away from the dock and we started the mile walk back to the Maine-land (HA!).
We eventually made it back to the beach. I returned to the car and grabbed the rest of our snacks, and Jonathan and the kids went down to the beach to hang out for a bit.
To no one’s surprise, Clara and Jonas ended up getting rather wet. When we reached the beach, we were surprised to see just how much the tide had gone out. And so there were a lot of creatures to see and there were lots of shells to collect.
Everyone had a great time.
And of course, snacks were in order as well. And we even had a lovely shady spot to hang out in while we ate our snacks.
All good things must come to an end, and so eventually, we rounded up the troops and we made our way home.
