We went to the Salcedo Saturday market, located in Makati city. Makati is the part of Manila where expats tend to live, so we saw a lot more white people than usual. (Still no kids though.)
The market was actually quite small. I would guess it was about 2 acres or so. This was actually nice, because it was much more digestible than Divisoria. We walked around it a couple of times looking at everything, deciding what to buy.
There were a few stalls that sold souvenirs and plants (I LOVE the plants here!) but most of the stalls sold food. With some..ahem… unique options…
We got some delicious things: Pan de Sal (salt bread), lamb kebab (Pita with veggies and lamb sausage), and some amazing gyoza.
And we also bought some suman. It’s glutinous rice cooked in sweet coconut milk, wrapped in a banana leaf. I have been wanting to try this. And it was pretty good. But really, look at it. It’s just plain cute, all wrapped up in its little banana leaf package.
The watermelon juice was also a clear favorite. It was delicious. It was frosty and watermelon-y, and perfect for a wicked hot day.
After we ate our deliciousness, we went to the adjoining park and the kids went and wore themselves out. This was the first playground we’ve seen, so they were really excited to run around.
It was a great park. The trees were huge and they shaded everything. And they had these awesome wind thingys in all the trees. I have no idea what they are. But they sure looked cool. Look at that cute little guy. He hasn’t been feeling well since we got here (3 teeth coming in, pink eye, 2 colds) and he is finally getting back to normal, and it is glorious. I had honestly forgotten what a happy, delightful baby he was. He’s a different child now that he’s feeling well. Hallelujah!
It was a lovely afternoon. And we all really enjoyed ourselves.
You know what else we really enjoyed? The air conditioner in the Uber on the way back home.:)
