As soon as we arrived at our Chicago Airbnb, we started the process of getting my new computer up and running. By the next morning, all the files and data had been transferred. And it was ready to go for Jonathan’s first day of work!
The first day was still pretty weird, because of the computer debacle. Near the end of the day, he learned that he could get a loaner computer and a security key from the Chicago office. So he drove in. It was too late to get a computer by the time he arrived, but he was able to get a security key.
And so, he came home, got things set up inasmuch as he could on my computer. But it was clear that he needed to get his own computer pretty quick before he could really get things going.
So, the next day (Tuesday) he drove into the office again to pick up a loaner computer. And the IT guys there helped him to get it all set up. And then he was off to the races for realsies.
At about 1 o’clock, I got a text message from Genny Phillips (whose house we had been living in before we came on this adventure), saying that Jonathan had received a couple of packages at their house.
They looked suspiciously like a security key and a laptop.
Fortunately for us, Genny is the best in the whole wide world and she took them both to UPS and had them forwarded to our Airbnb. Hallelujah! The Great Computer Saga of 2022 was coming to an end. In the end, we learned that Amazon had tried to send 3 different laptops. And 6 security keys. Crazy. And in the meantime, the loaner laptop was perfect.
As for the rest of us, we had a couple of quiet days. We got settled, did laundry, went to Costco, hit the grocery store, and mucked out the car.
The kids were also delighted to find that there are some board games here. And I taught the boys to play Speed, and they both have actually gotten pretty good. For a few days that was basically all that they wanted to do.
It was lovely to just have a few quiet days after a couple of very full (and awesome) weeks.
On Wednesday, I took the kids to see a movie at Emagine. During the day on weekdays, they often screen older movies for a much lower price. It cost us $20 for 6 tickets to Hotel Transylvania 3. We even had awesome recliner seats. And since it was so cheap, we even sprang for some popcorn and 1 bag of candy to share.
The kids absolutely loved this. And honestly, I did too. It was so fun. And it is so delightful that all of our kids can now sit through a movie in a movie theater without getting restless or crying.
